against that state's new voter i.d. law for now. a judge in the past few hours blocked the law from goalkeeper into effect. judge simpson ordered the sat not to enforce the voter i.d. requirement in this year's election, but it will go into full effect next year. opponents of the law say it would hurt voter turnover, especially among minorities and the leeld he who are likely to vote for democrats in that state. it was in june that a top state republican lawmaker predicted the law would help governor romney. >> which is going to allow governor romney to win the state of pennsylvania, done. >> and joining us now, judith brown, diana's co-director of the advancement project, a civil rights organization that filed the lawsuit. thank you for your time. we played that state lawmaker who said if that law was in effect in pennsylvania, he felt that governor romney would win that state, done. the polling shows opposite. nevertheless there was a concern. let's talk about the split decision. the judge is blocking it for now, but what happens next? >> well, you know, this is a big victory for

lawsuits pending that could negate some of the new laws that are intended to require photo ids for voters? >> first observation is, in terms of the case in maryland, that was one misguided example. never should have happened. the race was not that close. it was a huge mistake by that individual and he paid for it with a time in prison. in terms of your concerns about voter i.d., and having to show id, i live in virginia and just got my voter card. they allow any kind of thing, a utility bill, or anything like that. it is a lot easier to vote then to get on an airplane. if you are worried about fraud, i think that these are reasonable requirements. >> in terms of polling, to the extent that both firms can, we try to pull a registered voter list. registered voters who have presumably -- i mean, we try to sample who have not only registered -- people who have not only registered but voted in the last election. >> in a lot of states, they have to have a photo id. how do you account for that? >> our callers asked you to show them your folder id -- your photo i.d. >> not a lot that you can do.

no child left behind has come into law is the kind of national psychosis, but there's something psychotic about it. it can't be numbered. it doesn't count. my father's psychiatrist use to take me to the back boards of mental hospitals in massachusetts and so many people on the most severe depression the only way they could ease their discomfort is by numbering everything. they would restlessly move object surrounded the table to get them in the pattern, and as i mentioned, some of the bureaucrats in washington maybe they would enjoy este in the recovery house to get over this numerical what action. this hoping of judging children and their teachers primarily on the basis of that very narrow slice of purely mechanistic skills that can be measured more simplistically by standardized exam and ruling out as a consequence ruling out all of those more authentic forms of culture that are not reduced to numbers like reading books for pleasure. it's the only reason i read a book. you get no points for pleasure or asking thoughtful questions or indulging curiosity, developing real critical capacity

. the reason, a closed refinery, pipeline problems, and strict state pollution laws. cnn's senior producer paul vercammen is in burbank, california, at a gas station where people are hurting. >> reporter: they are. in fact, they're absolutely stunned this morning when they see the price because if you look behind me, it is at $4.61 a gallon for regular. well, that is just a shock to the people here. they can't believe it jumped 19 cents overnight. now, this shell station, you can see, does have gas and it is getting more gas right now. you highlighted, carol, there were costco stations throughout the area that ran out of gas. and believe it or not, the $4.61, that's a bargain for this neighborhood. we saw a lot of signs that said about $4.77, $4.79. it is costing people a lot of money to fuel up. many of them are coming into the gas station, maybe putting in $20, $40, for some big suvs. they're spending more than $100 just to fill up. and we saw one man earlier today, chatted with him, he drives into the station, looks at the price, just shakes his head and then he drives off. let's hear what h
